A US government study of crashes involving Toyotas has found driver error in many of the reported cases of runaway cars.
In 35 of 58 accidents examined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the drivers had failed to step on the brake, in others drivers only braked at the last minute, raising doubts about tales of runaway Toyotas in which drivers were unable to stop their suddenly accelerating cars.
Some of the findings were presented to members of Congress on Tuesday, but the investigation remains ongoing, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The government has been undertaking an investigation of Toyota after a series of recalls and horror stories about drivers who could not stop their cars.
Toyota recalled more than 8 million vehicles worldwide due to sticking gas pedals and unsecured foot mats that could slide underneath the pedals. It was also forced to pay a fine for not reporting the gas pedal problem in a timely fashion. m&c
