Forest Minister Benoy Viswom has said that only trees can effectively counter global warming.
He was inaugurating ‘Bhoomigeetham 2010,’ an environmental convention for students, organised by the SNDP Yogam Vanitha Sangham, here on Sunday.
He warned that if environmental degradation were allowed to continue, people may soon have to buy air to even breathe. Twenty-five years ago, it was inconceivable that people in Kerala would buy bottled drinking water. But that had happened, he said.
Over the past 100 years, the temperature of the earth had gone up by 0.63 degrees Celsius. If environment destruction continued at the current rate, the temperature would soon rise by 6.34 degrees Celsius, he said, quoting scientific studies. But many species on earth, including man, would not be able to survive if the temperature rose by even 3 degrees Celsius, he said.
Mr. Viswom said that in the past four years, 1.78-crore saplings had been planted in the State. He expressed confidence that of those saplings, at least half would grow into trees. Students of the State had playing a commendable role in planting those saplings. The ‘Ente Maram’ programme launched by the State government had become a model for the social forestry programme of the country, he said.
Mr. Viswom was all praise for the SNDP Yogam Vanitha Sangham for organising the meet. He said that as a result of a series of campaigns, children were more aware than adults of environmental issues.
Delivering the presidential address at the function, SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan said competition for water would reach ominous proportions if steps were not taken on a war-footing to protect and conserve the environment. He said that Sree Narayana Guru had stressed the importance of environment protection at a time when the issue was not a global subject of concern.
Presenting the subject, SNDP Yogam Vanitha Sangham president Sherly P. Anand said life on earth was already facing threats owing to environmental degradation. Man’s greed was the primary cause of this degradation. Along with environment protection, campaigns should also be undertaken to promote agriculture among the younger generation. The Hindu
